The Dive Industry Professional
In 1972, Spencer Slate completed his military training and returned to East Carolina University, and the dive club he left behind. Slate got certified by the YMCA and graduated college with a degree in Business with a minor in education. He moved south to jacksonville, Slate worked with the YMCA and became a YMCA Instructor in 1974 and cross over to PADI.
Captain Slate is the author of several dive training manuals and was the project manager of the Spiegel Grove artificial reed project. His efforts have not gone unnoticed by the diving industry either. In 2004 Slate was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame. As 2019 Grand Marshall, Captain Slate was awarded the Golden Conch Award by the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce.
